Happy Birthday.

I'm off to Winnipeg today! I can't wait. I'm packed, I'm ready, I've turned off my work email on my Blackberry (gasp!) and I'm just killing time until my cab arrives to whisk me away. I've lived in Toronto about half my life, but I still think of Winnipeg as home. And this is the best time of year to visit - in that very short window of opportunity between Winnipeg's two seasons: mosquito and icebox.

My mom and I are going to celebrate our 100th birthday! Together we turn 100 this year. (I realize by putting this on my blog I may not ever celebrate another one...) My mom is not super-impessed by my mathematical acuity around this momentous number. My friend Sarah pointed out it could be worse; she and her mother turn 150 this year!

My mom is very camera shy and so I have very few pictures of her. But I love this one of her taken when we lived on Kenaston Blvd in Winnipeg many years ago. One of the things I really admire about her is not only is she a fantastic cook, but she is a very relaxed cook and brings everything together quietly, elegantly and with no fuss. She always amazes me. I spent many hours in this kitchen "helping" (yep, doing nothing but yak and watching her cook).

Happy birthday, mom! I know birthdays aren't your thing. But I hope you had a good day all the same. (See you later!)

Happy camper
